WHAT SHOULD THE HANDLEBARS OF A FOCUS ROAD BIKE BE LIKE?
In a nutshell:
- Most important aspect: Perfect fit
- Test different models to find the right handlebars
- Focus road bikes rely on aluminium handlebars
The most important aspect when choosing a handlebar: it has to fit! The best material is of no use if you don’t feel comfortable with the handlebar shape.
Therefore, we recommend testing different models extensively. This is the only way to find out which handlebars harmonize best with your physiognomy.
Also make sure you have a suitable stem: This can be used to optimize the seating position.
Our road bikes from Focus are equipped with aluminium handlebars, e.g. innovative Fizik Cyrano R5. Good carbon handlebars have slight technical advantages over aluminium handlebars, including weight and damping, but are significantly more expensive. That’s why they are usually only used on absolute upper-class bikes.
WHAT GEARS SHOULD A GOOD FOCUS ROAD BIKE HAVE?
In a nutshell:
- Focus road bikes equipped with Shimano shifting systems
- Innovation and reliability as characteristics
- Electronic circuits with great switching properties
All our Focus road bikes have manual derailleur gears that come from Shimano, e.g. the Shimano 105 or the Shimano Ultegra. The company has been a guarantor of innovation and reliability for decades. Which shifting system suits you best depends heavily on your individual driving style.
Are you thinking about equipping your Focus road bike with an electronic gearshift? Then you should definitely expect significant additional costs.
However, your bike then has a great shifting system: a light push of a button is enough to initialize shifts that are as fast as they are precise.
WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN IT COMES TO WHEELS?
In a nutshell:
- Carbon rims rare
- Higher rim: more stable, better aerodynamics
- Lower rim: lighter, higher acceleration
Unlike the frames and handlebars, carbon is rarely used on the wheels. The reason: aluminium rims have better braking properties, especially on wet tracks.
Only very expensive carbon rims are able to compensate for their braking disadvantages with other advantages (e.g. their low weight).
Our Focus road bikes are equipped with high-quality rims made of aluminium.
The higher the rim, the more stability it provides, and it also has aerodynamic advantages.
A lower rim, on the other hand, scores with a lower weight and better acceleration. Ultimately, the right rim selection depends very much on your personal premises.
THE TIRES OF A FOCUS ROAD BIKE – WHAT YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO
In a nutshell:
- 23 mm: lighter weight
- 25 mm: better rolling behaviour
- Focus cyclocross bikes with wide tires
When it comes to tires, there are two standard widths (23 and 25 mm) in the road bike sector, each of which has its specific advantages: The narrower tires are naturally somewhat lighter, the wider tires offer better rolling behaviour.
Of course, you will find road bikes from Focus with a tire width of 23 and 25 mm. Especially if you travel a lot with your road bike, you should pay attention to a high level of puncture protection. As a rule, however, even good entry-level bikes have very reliable tires.
There are several Focus cyclocross bikes in our road bike range. These bikes are not just road bikes, but are also made for off-road use. Therefore, unlike conventional road bikes, they have wider tires (33 mm) with a deeper profile.
ALUMINUM OR CARBON – WHICH FRAME SHOULD A FOCUS ROAD BIKE HAVE?
In a nutshell:
- Aluminium frame: more affordable
- Carbon frame: better riding characteristics
- Carbon only advisable in the high-priced segment
Basically, the following applies to the choice of frame: aluminium is much cheaper, carbon has the better driving characteristics: It has a high stiffness, good vibration damping and is much lighter.
However, for a good carbon frame you have to dig deeper into your pocket. That’s why you’ll find almost exclusively aluminium frames in the entry-level and mid-range sectors, while carbon frames dominate in the high-end sector.
We would tend to advise against cheap bikes with carbon frames (i.e. less than 1500 euros), as these frames are usually poorly made and even technically inferior to good frames made of aluminium. For this reason, only our high-class Focus road bikes have carbon frames.
THESE ARE THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF FOCUS ROAD BIKES
Excellent equipment and the best driving characteristics are a matter of course for road bikes from the Focus brand. The guidelines of Derby Cycle Werke GmbH in Lower Saxony include a lot of passion for cycling, state-of-the-art technologies and the highest standards of perfection.
The motto here is: athletes develop for athletes. As a beginner or professional, you can test a Focus road bike with us at any time. Professionals from the French cycling team ag2r La Mondiale, supported by the Derby Cycle Werke, became team winners at the Tour de France.
Focus bikes always offer innovations that arise from the experiences of successful cyclists. Entry-level models from Focus are available from us for as little as 599 euros.
With a double-butted aluminium frame, Shimano Sora rear derailleur, concept components and Schwalbe Lugano 23-622 tires, such a model offers a lot. Focus road bikes with a particularly light aluminium frame, Shimano 1000 gears, lightweight fork made of carbon and Concept EX wheels cost around 105 euros.
At just under 1400 euros, road bikes from this brand with a complete carbon frame, Shimano 105 or Ultegra gears and lightweight Fulcrum WH-CEX 6.5 wheels are available. In the price range from just under 3000 euros, ultra-light, high-quality carbon material is the order of the day for the fork, frame and stem.
It also includes a Fulcrum WH-CEX 4.5 wheelset and an electronic Shimano Dura-Ace 22-speed gearshift and brake. In our Focus top model for just under 9000 euros, extreme lightness (Super Izalco Carbon, 5.4 kg), ideal stiffness and 22-speed Sram Red gears are the trump cards.
